Shankill Road milkshake shop serving up a treat for the last seven years

March 4, 2022 by No Comments

A Shankill Road business celebrated their seventh birthday in style on Friday – with milkshakes, music and magic.

Andrea’s Milkshake Shop, based in the heart of the community, held a party for the children in the area today at 2pm, in time for them getting out of school for the weekend.

The shop, which serves everything sweet, from their famous milkshakes, popcorn, slush puppies and more, has seen customers travelling from across Northern Ireland.

Speaking to Belfast Live, Jeanette Burns said: “I actually used to work here in Andrea’s before I bought it. It has now been seven years since I have been the owner. We really can’t believe it has been seven years.

“It is great, especially the kids, they really do make it. The name Andrea comes from the previous owners’ daughter, so I wanted to keep the name. Everybody will always know this as Andrea’s.

“We do a bit of everything. Our Kinder Bueno milkshakes would definitely be our most popular. We have about 58 flavours of slush puppies. We do nachos, churros, popcorn, pancakes, crepes, you name it.

“People are travelling to see us, it is brilliant. They hear about us through word of mouth and they are travelling from across the city and then from outside of Belfast too.”

Andrea’s opens seven days a week and stays open until 10pm each evening – with night time being a popular time for customers seeking a sugar fix.

When the pandemic hit, like many businesses, Andrea’s closed their doors after trialling a delivery service.

But priding themselves on the standard of their desserts, Jeanette says she wanted everything to be fresh, so the delivery was put on hold .

“We closed for three months from Christmas Eve until March,” Jeanette added.

“At the start it wasn’t so bad because my daughter had just had a baby so we were able to spend a lot of time with them which was lovely. It did get to the stage where we all just couldn’t wait to get back to work.

“I am a local woman and live just up the road, so it is special to me to be located here. We sponsor local football teams and try to get involved as much as possible.

“The whole community spirit in the Shankill is brilliant, there’s always something going on. I know this week they are collecting donations for Ukraine. They’re always wanting to do good.

“In here, we wold know customers more by their order than by name. Don’t get me wrong, we know a lot of their names, but it’s more ‘there’s your man who likes the red and blue slush’, things like that. It is really good craic and you hear it all.

“One woman, who was pregnant, came in and asked us to make her a milkshake with pickled onion Space Raiders – you can imagine the smell!

“For people who have supported us over the last seven years, I can’t thank them enough. They are putting food on my table at the end of the day.”

Andrea’s is located at 272 Shankill Road Belfast.
