Bonza Australia is the newest airline to enter the regional travel market | The Murray Valley Standard
Bonza Airline is the latest carrier to join the regional travel market, announcing it will fly 25 routes to 16 destinations.
Trips to and from east coast destinations including Albury, Cairns, Coffs Harbor, Port Macquarie, Newcastle, Bundaberg, Whitsundays, Townsville, Sunshine Coast, Toowoomba, Mildura, and Mackay are on the agenda with Melbourne the only capital city on the airline’s list so far.
Bonza will join the market alongside airlines like Rex and QantasLink.
Created last October, Bonza Australia is an independent carrier from former Virgin Australia executive Tim Jordan and has gained substantial financial backing from US investment firm 777 Partners.
Mr Jordan said Bonza was targeted at people travelling to regional destinations, outside of the “golden triangle” of Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane.
“Not only will the flights open up new markets for the region’s tourism industry, locals will have the opportunity to explore their own backyard with ultra-low fares,” he said.
Regional Aviation Association of Australia chief executive Steven Campbell said Bonza would bring in a bit of competition on the “thinner routes” that Qantas and Virgin don’t cover “because they don’t really make much money”.
“Yet regional people still want to fly to holiday destinations and to do so at a reasonable prices is always welcomed,” Mr Campbell said.
Australian Airports Association chief executive James Goodwin welcomed the news but said consumer confidence in borders remaining open was still low.
“Introducing new flights, new air routes is a positive but it is going to be tough for the airline to to fill those seats at a time where we know domestic air travel is only at about 50 per cent of pre-pandemic levels,” Mr Goodwin said.
Bonza customers will have to pay for food service and any checked baggage.
Flights are not yet on sale.
